- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef or turkey over medium heat until browned and crumbled. Drain any excess fat.
- Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the onion is translucent.
- In a large bowl, combine the cooked meat mixture, cream of mushroom soup, milk, and 1/2 cup of the shredded cheddar cheese. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Spread the meat mixture in the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer on top of the meat mixture.
- Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the tater tots.
- Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the tater tots are golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
- Let the casserole cool for 5-10 minutes before serving.
Notes
For a crispy tater tot topping, pre-bake the tater tots for 15-20 minutes before assembling the casserole. This will ensure a perfect texture. You can also experiment with different types of cheese or add additional vegetables to the filling for more flavor.
